"Ka, used as a pronoun on its own, is a second person singular (you) in Tagalog, the lingua franca of the Philippines. As a prefix, ka, when affixed to almost any word, engenders an intersubjective dimension of things, peoples, events, and ideas, similar to the English prefix, co, i.e. Kapisanan (a gathering of people with common purpose), Kamalayan (collective consciousness), Kababayan (people from the same nation/village). On the other hand, ka also identifies difference in opposition i.e. kaaway (enemy) and kalaban (opponent), yet still acknowledging our shared struggle against each other.

This theme is an exploration in language and how our mother tongue dictates out cultural legacy. Ka, is a statement to the Filipinos’ infinite capacity for inclusion, and recognition of our collective identity."
- Caroline Mangosing, Curator

The 6th Annual Kultura Filipino Arts Festival will be held August 26-28, 2011.  KAPISANAN’s signature summer event is a vibrant street festival held in Kensington Market that showcases music, theatre, film, visual art, poetry, spoken word and more.  If you enjoy soaking up the sun, being immersed in Filipino culture through different art forms, and making new friends, then this is the place to be!   More info at Kapisanan
