re/connections I
This photography series was inspired by Lee Maracle, who is a member of the Sto:loh Nation of British Columbia and is one of the most prolific aboriginal authors in Canada, and recognized authority on issues concerning aboriginal people.
Before my trip to the Philippines in 2009, I listened to Lee Maracle say that language and culture are never truly lost - we are disconnected. One strategy is to learn about the social-political reasons why we are disconnected then reach out with one word, one vowel, one sound, one image.
"re/connections" is one offering.

Love & Home

In December 2009, my Uncle drove me to Malate so I could participate in the politicallly-focused Manila Pride March held during Human Rights week in the Philippines.
We parked in front of a group of protesters holding signs saying all gay people should burn in hell. We read the signs and sat in silence for a moment. Then he gave me an encouraging smile, a hug, and let me go to meet old and new friends in Remedios Circle. We marched together up Roxas Boulevard to Pedro Gil then down Taft Avenue to Maria Y. Orosa.
I felt the support of family and the power of community.
That was love. That was home.
