The old world is dying, but a new world is being born...

Picture
"The old world is dying, but a new world is being born. It generates inspiration from the chaos that beats upon us all. The false grandeur and security, the unfulfilled promises and illusory power, the number of the dead and those about to die, will charge the forces of our courage and determination. The old world will die so that the new world will be born with less sacrifice and agony on the living."  - Carlos Bulosan from the novel, America is in the Heart in which the author describes his experience as a Filipino migrant worker in 1930s.

This mixed media installation encourages participants to interact with Philippine culture using virtual musical instruments triggered by the viewer's movements.

The work addresses themes of migration, return and rebirth using the following elements:

  • A wind chime made of 65 capiz shells with images of Philippine cultural icons transferred to the surface
  • Two 20" x 30” prints - a poem about meeting Filipino migrant workers at my art school and an image index "map"
  • A sound installation with audio of the Hudhud chants of the Ifugao People
  • An interactive sound piece - a sensor captures movement and controls a virtual Philippine bamboo instrument
