Guided By Clouds (2012)
__Artist statement as hand-written on Cordillera postcards left on a bangko / wooden bench:
Views of a journey across the northern Luzon landscape to a former American military base. Greeting the mountains that protected members of the Hukbalahap. The reclaimed bayside and the Spanish walled city of Intramuros.
Views of SM shopping malls, barangay towns, Baguio pine trees, Burnham Park rides and a Jose Rizal memorial.
Driving through clouds to reach magnificent rice terraces. At the crossroads between Kalinga and Benguet, the Chico River - a place of indigenous people's struggle - flows like living history.
In Bontoc, a wise gardener shares her knowledge of healing plants and how to make friends with wild pigs.
A jeepney ride to Sagada where ghosts walk and ancestors hang in coffins on the side of mountain. A proud and independent people dealing with ubiquitous tourists in their midst.
An abrupt end to the photographic journey that was guided by clouds.
A soul left in the Cordillera mountains and a longing to reconnect.
maraming salamat / many thanks to:
